Stocks Of The Month: ANSS, DDD

Leading off 2013 are two high-growth stocks, from a technology that has inspired many web puff pieces and banner ads...3D "printing".

3D Systems (DDD) seems the obvious choice to cover the hardware side. The software choice was more interesting - at first I thought of buying Autodesk, but Dassault Systemes is larger in market cap and has better fundamentals. Dassault, however, is thinly traded as an foreign, over-the-counter stock. Finally, I found Ansys (ANSS), slightly smaller than Autodesk but with fundamentals similar to Dassault.

Ansys (ANSS)

Positives:
Good profit and operating margins (25% and 37% respectively).
Positive revenue (14%) and profit (13%) growth.

Negatives:
Mild ROA (7%) and ROE (11%).
Low insider ownership (0.76%).

3D Systems (DDD)

Positives:
Explosive revenue (57%) and earnings (87%) growth.
Positive fundamentals across the board, rare for a quickly-growing company.

Negatives:
Wildly expensive 86 P/E, though forward 37 P/E is slightly better.
Heavily shorted (43%).

Here's my current portfolio. As always, I believe in all of these stocks - until I sell them.
