Stocks Of The Month: CSCO, HSY, LVS, SBUX, WYNN (Oh, The Vices)

After selling AGNC, BBEP, and NLY last month, I needed some new, reliable dividend stocks.

Chocolate. Coffee. Gambling. The Internet. These are vices which humans just can't get enough of. As an investment idea, it seems as good as any other I've thought of.

Cisco (CSCO)

Positives:
$47B cash, "only" $16B debt.
Safe, growing 2.7% dividend yield.

Negatives:
Tepid revenue growth (5%).
$139B market cap.

Hershey (HSY)

Positives:
65% return on equity.
Seems very Heinz-ish in quality. (hey, Warren Buffett.)

Negatives:
Tepid revenue growth (7%).
More debt ($2B) than cash ($570M).

Las Vegas Sands (LVS)

Positives:
Excellent revenue (26%) and earnings (120%!) growth.
52% held by insiders.

Negatives:
More debt ($10B) than cash ($2B).

Starbucks (SBUX)

Positives:
Good profit (11%) and operating (14%) margins.
Solid revenue (13%) and earnings (25%) growth.

Negatives:
Fairly small (1.1%) dividend yield.
It is possible, maybe even likely, that someone will come along and make a better cup of coffee someday.

Wynn Resorts (WYNN)

Positives:
Outstanding earnings growth (44%).
Ridiculous return on equity (224%!!).

Negatives:
Tepid revenue growth (5%).
More debt ($6B) than cash ($2B).

Stocks Of The Month: SSYS, XONE

3D Systems has been a "stock of the month" twice already. However, it would be quite arrogant, and very likely incorrect, if I were to act under the assumption that DDD will the only winner in the red-hot 3D printing industry. Therefore, two high-growth competitors have been added to the portfolio...

Stratasys (SSYS)

Positives:
116% revenue growth.
$141M cash, $0 debt.
42% of shares owned by insiders.

Negatives:
No earnings as of yet; forward P/E of 34.
Negative cash flows.
Negative profit margin (-4%) and ROE (-1%).

ExOne (XONE)

Positives:
192% revenue growth.
$71M cash, $5M debt.
37% of shares owned by insiders.

Negatives:
No earnings as of yet; forward P/E of 117(!!).
Atrocious profit (-31%) and operating (-25%) margins.
Heavily shorted (32%).

Here's my current portfolio (growth, dividend, and speculative). As always, I believe in all of these stocks - until I sell them. (Note that AGNC, BBEP, NLY, and PSEC have now been classified as "speculative"...if you would be thinking I am now one step away from exiting these stocks, you might be right.)

Stocks Of The Month: QIHU, DDD

After watching Telsa Motors shares triple over the past 2 months, I had an appetite for a couple of growth stocks...one new to the portfolio, and one already owned...that have each doubled over the past year, yet are each only around $5B in market cap.

Qihoo 360 (QIHU)

Positives:
China. Mobile. Search. A competitor/complimentary-investment of Baidu.
Explosive revenue growth (59%).
$301M cash, $0 debt.

Negatives:

Modest operating (11%) and profit (10%) margins.
Negative earnings growth (-61%).

3D Systems (DDD)

Positives:
Good revenue growth (31%).
3D printing is a hot industry (like, "electric car" hot).

Negatives:
Expensive 100 P/E, though forward 35 P/E is slightly better.
Negative earnings growth (-5%).

Stocks Of The Month: BLK, CNI

Two more dividend stocks have been added to the portfolio this month...raising the total number of stocks held to 40. A couple of years ago, I lamented that 36 stocks was too many keep track of. I'd like to think that these 40 are easy to own, probably because they represent high-quality investments. We shall see.

BlackRock (BLK)

Positives:
Has some $3.7T (as in trillion) in managed investments. A big fish, one might say.
Outstanding operating (37%) and profit (26%) margins.
Decent revenue (9%) and earnings (10%) growth.
2.6% dividend yield.

Negatives:
Somewhat frighteningly large. See "big fish" comment above.

Canadian National Railway (CNI)

Positives:
Outstanding operating (37%) and profit (25%) margins.
Steady, well-funded 1.7% dividend yield.
Warren Buffett likes trains, no doubt because they are a "moated" business.

Negatives:
Low cash ($0.1B), high debt ($7.6B).
Negative earnings growth (-28%).

Here's my current portfolio (growth, dividend, and speculative). As always, I believe in all of these stocks - until I sell them.

Stock Of The Month: KO

Most of my dividend stocks are energy/commodity companies, but for this month, I chose "black gold" of a different kind. Plus, I can now say I own each of Warren Buffett's top four holdings (Wells Fargo, IBM, and American Express being the other three).

Coca-Cola (KO)

Positives:
The most perfect consumer product ever invented. Cheap/easy to produce, universally popular, sold everywhere.
Stellar margins (19% profit, 23% operating) and ROE (28%).
Very safe, growing dividend, currently yielding 2.8%.

Negatives:
Fizzling revenue growth (4%).
$17B cash vs. $33B debt (though I strongly suspect they hold debt out of choice, rather than necessity).

Here's my current portfolio (growth, dividend, and speculative). As always, I believe in all of these stocks - until I sell them.

Stock Of The Month: AMZN

This month's stock is Amazon (AMZN), a repeat choice from February 2012 and May 2012. Every once in a while, I will decide that a stock I already own is deserving of a larger allocation in my portfolio, aside from its current valuation.  It takes focus away from "key statistics" (even though I somewhat lazily updated the "Positives/Negatives" below), and towards the goal of simply accumulating shares of great companies.

Amazon (AMZN)

Positives:
$124B market cap: roughly equal to VMware ($32B) + Target ($43B) + Netflix ($10B) + 10% of Apple (iPad and iTunes) ($39B)...plenty of upside here.
Massive revenues ($61B) and growth (22%).
Clean balance sheet ($11B cash, $4B debt).

Negatives:
Expensive 76 forward P/E.
Low margins (1% operating, 0% profit).

Here's my current portfolio. As always, I believe in all of these stocks - until I sell them.

Stocks Of The Month: ANSS, DDD

Leading off 2013 are two high-growth stocks, from a technology that has inspired many web puff pieces and banner ads...3D "printing".

3D Systems (DDD) seems the obvious choice to cover the hardware side. The software choice was more interesting - at first I thought of buying Autodesk, but Dassault Systemes is larger in market cap and has better fundamentals. Dassault, however, is thinly traded as an foreign, over-the-counter stock. Finally, I found Ansys (ANSS), slightly smaller than Autodesk but with fundamentals similar to Dassault.

Ansys (ANSS)

Positives:
Good profit and operating margins (25% and 37% respectively).
Positive revenue (14%) and profit (13%) growth.

Negatives:
Mild ROA (7%) and ROE (11%).
Low insider ownership (0.76%).

3D Systems (DDD)

Positives:
Explosive revenue (57%) and earnings (87%) growth.
Positive fundamentals across the board, rare for a quickly-growing company.

Negatives:
Wildly expensive 86 P/E, though forward 37 P/E is slightly better.
Heavily shorted (43%).

Here's my current portfolio. As always, I believe in all of these stocks - until I sell them.

2012 Stock Recap: The Ongoing Concerns

As previously mentioned, 2012 was a relatively disappointing year for my portfolio, underperforming the S&P 500 by some 9%.

Baidu (BIDU), American Software (AMSWA), Apache (APA), and Annaly Capital Management (NLY) appear to be the major culprits, of the stocks that I still own.  However, unlike some previous years, I am overall very pleased with the composition of my portfolio - and I don't anticipate any major turnover in 2013. (This, of course, is subject to change at any time.)

And now, let's look at all the stocks I've held going into this year, from worst to best - based solely on 2012's performance, while mostly ignoring any intra-year volatility:

bebe stores (BEBE)
Bought: Feb @ $8.99
Year-closing price: $4.00 (-56%)
Would have been sold, if not for it's (minor) dividend.

American Software (AMSWA)
Year-opening price: $9.45
Year-closing price: $7.76 (-18%)
Maybe it's time Oracle acquired these guys.

Intel (INTC)
Year-opening price: $24.25
Year-closing price: $20.62 (-15%)
Warren Buffett bailed. Having trouble in mobile.

Microsoft (MSFT)
Bought: Sep @ $31.09
Year-closing price: $26.71 (-14%)
Xbox, Surface, Windows 8, Windows Phone...when will it all come together?

Baidu (BIDU)
Year-opening price: $116.47

China isn't as hot as it has been in past years.

Apache (APA)
Year-opening price: $90.58

Hurt by the low price of natural gas.

McDonald's (MCD)
Year-opening price: $100.33
Year-closing price: $88.21 (-12%)
At a crossroads, much like 1999-2002. It will bounce back.

Annaly Capital Management (NLY)

Year-closing price: $14.04 (-12%)
Large dividend continues to cover capital losses.

Vodafone (VOD)
Year-opening price: $28.03

Year-closing price: $97.15 (-9%)

Year-opening price: $84.95
Year-closing price: $79.79 (-6%)
Hurt by the low price of natural gas, part two...

Year-opening price: $19.07
Year-closing price: $18.47 (-3%)
...and part three.

Was all over the chart in 2012. Execution in 2013 is crucial.

A less-than-hot China economy didn't hold them back.

A revolutionary company, firing on all cylinders.

2012 Stock Recap: The Departed

2012 was a relatively disappointing year for my portfolio.  It returned 7.2% vs. 16.0% for the S&P 500.

That difference is, in part, due to the horribly horrendous stocks listed below.  This investing year will be remembered by me as the year that destroyed "The Distressed" experiment once and for all.

Here's a look at all the stocks I've sold in the past year, from best to worst - based solely on 2012's performance, while mostly ignoring any intra-year volatility:

Sunrise Senior Living (SRZ)
Bought: Feb @ $7.94
Sold: Aug @ $14.29 (80%)
Year-closing price: $14.38 (81%)
This is how "The Distressed" is supposed to work...in theory.

Netflix (NFLX)
Year-opening price: $69.29

The worst REIT I'll ever own.

BP Prudhoe Bay Royalty Trust (BPT)
Year-opening price: $113.96
Sold: Aug @ $101.00 (-11%)
Year-closing price: $68.54 (-40%)
The last royalty trust stock I'll ever own.

Jones Soda (JSDA)
Year-opening price: $0.37
Sold: Sep @ $0.32 (-15%)
Year-closing price: $0.30 (-19%)
Coca-Cola?  Pepsi?  Monster?  Anyone?  Hello?

Rubicon Technology (RBCN)

Sold: Aug @ $31.07 (-45%)
Year-closing price: $17.31 (-70%)
Worthless, in so many ways.

Hansen Medical (HNSN)
Bought: Feb @ $3.51
Sold: Aug @ $1.74 (-50%)
Year-closing price: $2.08 (-41%)
"A much crappier version of Intuitive Surgical (ISRG)"?  Yes.

These guys will probably not cure cancer.

Hugoton Royalty Trust (HGT)
Year-opening price: $18.84
